If you listen to the news, it seems we have a food crisis: chronic hunger and rising population, solved only by doubling output. The prescription seems less dire when you consider that we already produce enough food to feed the existing population.

Where’s the missing link? Lurking in our wastebaskets. Food waste­—a nouveau offense you likely committed within the last 24 hours—can be addressed by better policy and technology within the several years.

So far, advocates for solving the problem have geared action toward showcasing percentages and figures, or launching initiatives to help consumers compost and recycle better. Of course, these are laudable endeavors. But if we really want to make a dent, several sectors must come together to form a solution. It’s not an easy fix, but it’s also not impossible.
