Our Mission

Can understanding about the Lower Midwest lead to love and action?

We say yes.

The New Territory Magazine is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization on a mission to advocate and foster love and protection of the Great Plains and Ozarks through publishing art and narrative writing focused on our region’s nature and culture.

Why Issue 19 is Worth Supporting

As you will see, Issue 19 pieces align directly with our vision of a thoughtful, vibrant Midwest

    • Even by Blues standards, 2025 was a hard year for Oklahoma’s Dusk Til Dawn Blues Festival. Britny Cordera finds some hopeful notes.
    • Gilbert Randolph muses on the history, contamination and wilds of Kansas City’s Blue River parkway.
    • Ozarks historian Brooks Blevins takes us back to Arkansas starlet Iris Korn’s Hollywood dreams
    • Can microbreweries crack open community connections? Amy De La Hunt is back, with a fun investigation into how unconventional spaces keep Lower Midwest towns together.
    • In “The Long Game,” Dean Klinkenberg reflects on his father’s death.
    • Our Here section of personal, place-based essays takes you to the Soulard Farmer’s Market, The Land Institute remnant prairie, and a dance studio at Indiana U.
    • We review a gender-affirming film, a new book on grassland rivers, and much more…

    … All in 128 pages!
