The New Territory is the publication showcasing life in the Lower Midwestern states as creative, inclusive and inspiring.

Our vision challenges stereotypes. The New Territory puts the Lower Midwest in the center of the universe, connecting leaders and creators so we can learn and grow together in a forward-thinking ecosystem. 

We add to the Lower Midwest’s sense of place through in-depth journalism, creative writing and art, and live events.

Quality is of utmost importance—and it’s the sturdy quality of our brand that sets apart The New Territory—and this region—as a place to understand, love, and tell others about. Commissioning photographers to capture our region, paying journalists to dig deep into stories, and printing a full-color, quarterly journal all come with high costs.

As you’ll see from the following document, The New Territory has carefully grown from one Midwest journalist’s passion project into a collaborative team that knows better than anyone how to find, edit and publish journalists and artists from the region and serve our devoted and growing fanbase. To date, we have worked with more than 330 contributors across 13 issues, co-hosted one conference and contributed to other events including readings, writers workshops and Midwest/rural forums.
