Readers, new friends of The New Territory and our contributors, and anyone with a love for humanities in the Lower Midwest.

What to expect 

A fun gathering!

  • short talks from feature writer Leslie VonHolten and feature photographer/board vice president Doug Barrett
  • New Territory back issues and merch on display

Why are we hosting a launch party?

Togetherness! Learning! Celebration! This is our first launch party since Issue 08 in 2019. A lot has changed, including our formation of a nonprofit, and we’re thrilled to share the joy with people. And while our print stories dive deep into their subjects in Issue 13, these talks promise to get even DEEPER as the contributors tell us about pursuing their dream projects.

Meet the Speakers

Leslie VonHolten

Leslie VonHolten writes about land and culture. Her work explores ecology, community history, literature, art, and the undertold stories of prairie spaces. Sometimes she curates a show or makes a zine. Her roots are in Kansas, where she mostly grew up.

Doug Barrett, 400 North Creative

Barrett, the owner of 400 North Creative, is an internationally-recognized African American photographer and cinematographer. Barrett’s editorial clients include The New York Times, TIME Magazine, National Geographic, Politico, Bloomberg News, Smithsonian Magazine, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, CNN, AARP, The Chronicle and elsewhere. His professional organizations include NPPA, ASMP and NABJ. He is on the Friends of the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art Board of Advisors and the Manhattan Kansas Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. In addition, he is Chair of the City of Manhattans Arts and Humanities Board, the Vice President of The New Territory Magazine Board of Directors and the Vice President for the Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills. He is currently based in Kansas.

The story of cowboys in the American west has been seen as the most iconic imagery still relevant today. I will be telling the story of the Black Kansas cowboys & farmers who — despite what you may hear — still are facing challenges of race, segregation, land access and funding.
