Lisa Grossman’s connection to and personal hopes for art in the Midwest:

“Painting on location in the expansive grasslands has enthralled me ever since and my work has been an exploration of what it feels like to be in that space.”

I moved to this region from Pennsylvania in 1988 and my first encounter with the Tallgrass prairies forever changed the trajectory of my life and work. Painting on location in the expansive grasslands has enthralled me ever since and my work has been an exploration of what it feels like to be in that space. I have often focused on the simple shapes of the flat-topped ridges and atmospheric perspective—the blueness of great distances. The challenge for me has been to make a dynamic and emotionally rich painting with an economy of means where space itself is the subject.
